What is BitTorrent?

BitTorrent is a simple protocol that helps to distribute large files very fast and efficiently and reduces bandwidth usage at servers serving those files at the same time. Usually if a company wants to deliver new products, e.g. iso images of an updated Linux distribution, it puts the images on a server from which users may download them. Each user downloads the data only from this server which produces a fairly amount of traffic that in turn produces high costs for the company.

The BitTorrent protocol solves this problem by using the upload capacities of downloaders. Imagine a user A is downloading a file from server X and a second user B contacts X to download the same file. Since server X knows what parts of the file have already been downloaded by A it is not necessary for B to download everything from X. Instead, X tells user B to download some data from user A and the rest of the data from X. That's the way BitTorrent works.

The benefits of this protocol are:
Download speed increases
Traffic and upload bandwidth is reduced at servers
